Third NSU Summer Lecture

As a part of the International Education and Research Alliance program between USC IMSC and Namseoul University, Korea, IMSC short course was held between July 16 and 20 at USC. Twenty students from Namseoul University participated in this one week intensive certificate course to learn "Geo-Social Mobile Programming".

IMSC's MediaQ project participated in the third annual USC Viterbi School of Engineering Maseeh Entrepreneurship Prize Competition. MediaQ was selected as one of the finalists in the competition (see this). 

Janus featured in NIJ SSBT COE webinar

Luciano Nocera presented Janus Project in a National Institute of Justice Sensor, Surveillance, and Biometric Technologies Center of Excellence webinar to an audience of law enforcement practitioners to seek feedback on functionality, use cases, and value to operations. The presentation titled "Janus System: spatiotemporal fusion of unstructured intelligence" provided an overview of Janus, a tool that supports forensic and real-time criminal activity surveillance based on multi-source multi-modal data. The demonstration showcased how Janus operates in simulated typical criminal activity scenarios and how operators interact with the front end to inform and respond to criminal situations.

Keynote Speech at SSTD 2013

Cyrus Shahabi gave a keynote speech at the 13th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases 2013 (SSTD 2013) held in Munich, Germany, August 21-23, 2013. The title was "TransDec: A Big-Data Framework for Decision-Making in Transportation Systems". 

Cyrus Shahabi and Seon Ho Kim attended the First USC-HKUST Joint Conference in Big Data Applications held in HKUST on Sep. 27th, 2013. Cyrus presented IMSC's activities on Big Data research and moderated a panel titled "Big Data, the most important new technology trend?" Cyrus and Seon Ho also participated in research meetings with HKUST faculty and students.

Cyrus Shahabi and Seon Ho Kim attended the 2013 USC Global Conference held in Seoul, Korea. The USC Global Conference gives an opportunity for USC alumni in Asia to reconnect and network. Cyrus gave a talk about Big Data research at IMSC.

IMSC hosted a group of executives and engineers from Samsung, Korea, to present USC's Big Data related research activities and to discuss potential collaboration in Big Data field between USC and Samsung. Dr. Geoffrey Long (Technical Director of AIL), Dr. Carl Kesselman (Director of Center for Medical Informatics), Dr. Don Paul (Executive Director of Energy Institute), Dr. Cesar Blanco (Head of R&D, Alfred E. Mann Institute), and Dr. Cyrus Shahabi (Director of IMSC) presented their activities and achievements in Big Data research.
